What is Sharetribe? Complete marketplace platform guide

Picture two founders. Tom spends €50,000 and 8 months building a marketplace that fails 2 weeks after launch. Anna launches hers for under $300 a month and makes her first €10,000 in month three.

The difference is that Anna uses Sharetribe.

Tom builds everything from scratch. He spends eight months on user logins, payment processing, messaging, and reviews, the features every marketplace needs. By launch, his money is gone and his idea is stale.

Anna starts selling on day 15. Every transaction brings her revenue and feedback. When users ask for new features, she has the budget to build them.

This guide explains what Sharetribe is and what it costs, so you can decide whether it fits your marketplace idea. If you want hands-on help deciding, see our Sharetribe marketplace development services.

The Netflix of marketplaces

You know how Netflix handles streaming technology, payments, and content delivery so movie makers can focus on creating great content?

Sharetribe does that for marketplaces. They handle the technical nightmare. You focus on connecting buyers and sellers.

Compare the two routes:

Without Sharetribe: Hire developers, build user authentication, integrate payments, create messaging, add reviews, handle security, fix bugs, and update servers. Typically 3 to 12 months. From €30,000.

With Sharetribe: Pick a plan, configure settings, add your branding, invite users, and launch. 2 to 6 weeks. $39/month while you build and test, $199/month (billed yearly) once you go live.

How Sharetribe works

Sharetribe is a marketplace in a box. Everything you need is there. You decide how to use it.

The foundation, included in every plan

User accounts work instantly. People sign up, create profiles, verify emails. You don’t write a line of code.

Payments flow through Stripe. Buyers pay securely. Money splits between sellers and your commission. Buyers get email receipts, and you can cancel a transaction and refund the payment. Invoices and tax calculation aren’t built in and need extra setup.

Listings look professional, with multiple photos, categories, search filters, and maps.

Communication happens naturally. Buyers message sellers. Automated emails confirm bookings. Review reminders go out. You moderate if needed.

Your customization

Customization is what makes your marketplace unique. Bike rentals need hourly rates. Consultants need project proposals. Home services need address collection.

Sharetribe adapts. No-code tools cover simple changes and APIs cover complex features, so you can start basic and add complexity as you grow.

Two marketplace models on Sharetribe

Here are two models people build, with illustrative numbers:

Equipment rental Picture a photography equipment rental marketplace that starts with 10 cameras and grows to 1,000+ items. With an average rental of €150 and a 20% commission, it earns €30 per transaction. At 100 rentals a month, that’s €3,000 in revenue.

Clothing swap Now picture a global clothing swap where items change owners permanently. Users list items and request others, while the platform keeps the swaps fair. Even at 100,000+ items, it has no inventory costs, because it earns on commission only.

Treat these numbers as illustrations, and run the same math with your own prices and commission.

The two Sharetribe pricing plans and what each includes

Prices as of October 2026, without VAT. Sharetribe is based in Helsinki but lists its prices in US dollars. Check sharetribe.com/pricing for current plans.

Sharetribe used to have four plans. Today it offers two plans, one for building a marketplace and one for running a live one.

Build: $39/month

The Testing Ground

For building and testing before launch. No-code tools, full code, and API access in Test mode, unlimited test users and listings, and test payments. Use it to show investors and test with friends while you learn the system. Sharetribe offers a free 14-day trial, no credit card needed.

Who uses it: Founders validating ideas and teams building a demo or a first version.

Live: $199/month billed yearly

The Live Marketplace

Everything in Build, plus live users, listings, transactions, and reviews. Full API access to your live marketplace. White-label means no Sharetribe branding anywhere. No transaction fees. $259/month if you pay month to month.

Who uses it: Every marketplace that takes live payments, from a local community to a venture-backed startup.

Usage credits

Both plans include 1M usage credits per month. Every action on your marketplace costs credits. Fetching a listing costs 1, and uploading an image costs 30. Usage above the included credits is billed separately, with volume discounts. In Sharetribe’s own examples, marketplaces with a few thousand dollars in monthly sales pay between $0 and $23 extra.

If you need to pause, the Hold plan keeps your data for $49/month.

The costs beyond the monthly fee

Besides the monthly fee, you pay transaction fees and, if you need custom features, development costs.

Transaction fees

  • Sharetribe on the Live plan: no transaction fee
  • Stripe payment processing in the EEA (October 2026): from 1.5% + €0.25 per transaction for standard EEA cards to 3.15% + €0.25 for cards issued outside the EEA and UK, plus 2% if currency conversion is needed
  • Your commission: 10-30% (you keep this)

Example: €100 service booking, with a 15% marketplace commission

  • Buyer pays: €100
  • Seller gets: €85 (€100 minus your 15% commission)
  • Stripe takes: €1.75 (1.5% + €0.25 for a standard EEA card), paid by the marketplace
  • Sharetribe takes: €0
  • You keep: about €13 (your €15 commission minus the Stripe fee)

On Sharetribe the marketplace pays the Stripe fees, so set your commission high enough to cover them.

On 100 transactions monthly, you earn €1,500 in commission and keep about €1,300 after Stripe fees. From that you pay the Live plan ($199/month billed yearly) and any usage above the included credits.

Development costs, if needed

The cost depends on the features and extensions you choose, how far the design moves from the default template, and the integrations you add. For an existing marketplace, the state of the code matters too. See what affects the cost of a Sharetribe project.

Custom code also needs hosting. Sharetribe recommends Render, from $19/month.

The Sharetribe story (why trust them?)

2011: Finnish founders Juho Makkonen and Antti Virolainen see a problem. Building marketplaces is stupidly hard. They start Sharetribe.

2012: Open-source launch. Developers love it. IT House founder Gunars Grundstoks meets Sharetribe’s founders, Juho Makkonen and Antti Virolainen, in Finland, when Sharetribe is a two-person team.

2014: IT House becomes official partner. We’ve been building on Sharetribe since.

2018: Sharetribe Flex launches, and full customization becomes possible.

Today: Sharetribe powers 1,500+ marketplaces.

The founders still run the company. Since 2018 it has been steward-owned: its team owns it, and its customers fund it. They focus on making marketplace building accessible.

We’ve been Sharetribe’s technology partner since 2014 and have contributed to their core platform code, including availability calendar, Stripe integration, and Rails upgrades. We worked on the Sharetribe Go codebase that its marketplaces ran on.

When Sharetribe makes sense (and when it doesn’t)

When does Sharetribe fit best?

You want to test a marketplace idea. A smaller budget. Standard marketplace model (buyers, sellers, transactions). Need to launch fast. Want proven technology. For a deeper look at this question, see how to know if Sharetribe fits your starting point.

Example: Imagine a local cleaning marketplace. Cleaners list availability and customers book, while the platform takes 20%. A setup like this could launch in 3 weeks and turn a profit in month two.

When should you consider other options?

You need complete code ownership. Blockchain, AI, or complex algorithms are core. Handling physical inventory yourself. Building social network features. Regulatory requirements demand custom infrastructure.

Example: Imagine a medical equipment marketplace with FDA compliance needs. A custom build makes more sense there, with a budget around €75K and a 9-month timeline. The specific requirements justify the cost.

A hybrid approach

Start on Sharetribe. Validate the model. Generate revenue. Use profits to fund custom platform. Migrate when ready.

Common questions (honest answers)

Can I customize the design?

Yes. The no-code tools cover branding, colors, and content pages. For anything beyond that, the code is open to you on both plans. Most successful marketplaces care more about transactions than aesthetics.

What if I outgrow Sharetribe?

Most of our Sharetribe clients stay on the platform for years. If you need something Sharetribe can’t do, there are two ways forward: extend Sharetribe with custom development, or move to a fully custom platform. Moving means exporting your data, building the new platform and migrating your users. It’s not easy, but it’s possible, and we help with either path.

Is it reliable?

The Live plan includes full infrastructure maintenance and 24/7 incident response. Regular security updates. Handles marketplaces doing millions in transactions. More reliable than most custom builds.

Do I need technical skills?

No. You can build a working marketplace without code. Features Sharetribe doesn’t offer out of the box need a developer. That’s where we come in.

What about mobile apps?

Sharetribe marketplaces are mobile-responsive websites. A native app is a separate development project built on the API.

Getting started (the smart way)

Week 1: Research and Planning Define your marketplace. Who sells? Who buys? What’s the transaction? How do you make money?

Study competitors. What works? What’s missing? How will you be different?

Week 2: Build and Test Start with the Build plan ($39). Create test marketplace. Configure features. Invite 10 potential users. Gather feedback.

Week 3: Launch Preparation Move to the Live plan when you’re ready for real users and payments. Pay yearly ($199/month) or month to month ($259) if you want to stay flexible.

Set up payments. Write marketplace rules. Plan seller onboarding. Prepare launch marketing.

Week 4: Go Live Launch to a small group and get the first transactions. Gather feedback, then fix issues and iterate quickly.

Month 2+: Growth Focus on supply. More sellers = more buyers. Optimize conversions. Add features users request. Scale gradually.

Why work with IT House?

We’ve been Sharetribe partners since 2014 and launched 30+ marketplaces. Along the way we’ve seen most mistakes and found the workarounds.

What we tell clients is simple. Most projects need only the standard Sharetribe features and a few small customizations. Only a small share need major custom work. We’ll tell you which group you’re in. Sometimes Sharetribe isn’t the right choice. Then we recommend custom development, which we’ve done since 2003 across 150+ projects. We only suggest the work your project needs.
